John Burgin is an illustrator and comic creator whose work is rooted in a lifelong love of drawing, storytelling, and superheroes. From spending hours as a child sprawled on the floor recreating images from picture books and comics, John’s passion for art naturally evolved into formal study in fine art and illustration at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Creating Frogboy
Frogboy, a helmet-wearing, skateboard-riding, staff-wielding superhero was inspired by John’s eldest son. Wanting his son to see himself as a hero on the page, John combined family, faith, and imagination—drawing inspiration from a ministry connection to South Africa’s FROG Center (“Fully Rely On God”), which ultimately gave Frogboy his name.
What excites John most about illustration is the freedom to build entire worlds—cities, landscapes, and characters that invite readers to step outside reality, even if only for a moment.
When John isn't drawing he enjoys spending time with his 3 kids, 2 grandkids and sipping on a good IPA.
